Ash class recently took a boat trip along the Kennet and Avon Canal, from Great Bedwyn to Crofton, in a wide beam canal boat named ‘Diana’.
The boat cruised along the canal, at a steady 3 miles per hour, encountering 2 locks in each direction along the way.
Both our students and staff learnt how the lock gates work to store and release water, and how to turn a long boat within the confines of a narrow canal at a place called a winding hole.
Our students operated successfully navigated all the locks, taking it in turns to operate the winding mechanisms, pull the gates open and push them closed again.
A big thank you goes to Bruce Boats of Great Bedwyn, The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust and the marvellous volunteer crew of ‘Diana’ for enabling our pupils to participate in this valuable learning experience and the RAOB (Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes) for funding this wonderful day trip.
